Geekdom… is it so wrong?!

4 05 2010

Now then, this has been a long time coming. For those who may or may not know me, I am a self professed geek and unfortunately have any stigma that this is linked with. So lets examine who I am and whether this title is correct by past standards:

  • I love computers
  • I play lots of video games
  • I love watching science fiction
  • I love reading science fiction
  • i’m good at pub quizzes
  • I wear glasses

So does mean i’m a geek? I reckon so, but I don’t think that makes me such a bad person.

First of all. Computers. Love them, hate them we are all surrounded by them. So if there’s a problem in the office, who would they call. Me. And in the computer based environment we currently live in… that makes me pretty damn popular. Look… at… me!

Video games. Consoles are gadgets and society today dictates that a the number of gadgets you have, the more people are in awe of you. For example, I recently got a PS3 and suddenly realised very quickly tht this console is designed for people who play games with friends whether it is in the virtual or real world. Geeks are supposed to be unsociable, however modern consoles are more sociable than ever. But be warned. I had an experience the otherday where I was bit over enthusiastic on my new PS3 and inadvertently published my trophy info to Facebook…. which in turn told everyone I was playing Singstar…. on my own! And while we’re on the subject of Facebook… the amount of people I say on there playing Farmville and Mafia… you’re all geeks!

Avatar…. how many of you watched it? By the fact it was the most watched film since Titanic I guess you all watched it. Sci fi by the way… oh and who watched Star Trek… enough said.

Sci Fi Books. Right… who read The Twilight Saga?! ok thats more fantasy but its a mixed bag really…

Now then, pub quizes. This is a grey area as to whether this amounts to Geekdom as they’re so inherent to today’s British culture. However, what I will say is that being good at these raises the popularity stakes 10 fold as its always good to have someone who knows the answers on your team.

Glasses… that is so 1980s! Being shortsighted has nothing to do with intellect or status.. if this is a hang up with you then maybe you need to really ask yourself whether this is something which should seriously be taken in to consideration.

What I mean is that names have a stigma… however harmless you may think they are. Its worth noting that every finger you point, there are 3 pointing back at you. Otherwords, if you think someone is a geek, then maybe you have to wonder what people call you! Seriousness over!!
